According to research by Greenpeace and the WWF, and surprising to many people as its not obvious, finance is a hugely polluting industry. We all hear about aviation, coal and oil but rarely see what's behind the glitzy adverts of the banking industry (there are some notable exceptions of course with ethical banks becoming more popular). The research shows that UK’s banks and big institutional investors are fuelling the climate crisis by backing polluting companies with loans, essential financial services and investments. This all supports things like coal mines, oil pipelines and fossil-fuel powered stations that wouldn’t have been possible without financial backing.
The Green Providers Directory is the UK's leading resource for finding eco-friendly, fair trade, organic and ethical goods and services. Founded in 2005 by Dr Gary Robertshaw, we hope that this blog will help to stimulate debate on the environment, fair trade and green issues, whilst making a positive contribution towards the pursuit of an ecologically sustainable future. Who are the UK's worst carbon polluters?
